The UV Index indicates the strength of sunburn-producing ultraviolet radiation at the Earth's surface.
UV Index 0-2: No protection required. You can safely stay outside.
UV Index 3-5: Take precautions. Seek shade during midday hours.
UV Index 6-7: Protection required. Reduce time in the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
UV Index 8-10: Extra precautions. Minimize sun exposure during midday hours.
UV Index 11+: Take all precautions. Avoid sun exposure during midday hours.

The UV Index is calculated using a computer model that accounts for the effects of sun-earth distance,
solar zenith angle,
total ozone amount, tropospheric aerosol optical depth, elevation,
snow/ice reflectivity and cloud transmission effects.
